Amnesty

Human rights have been a hot topic in local and international politics since the 1960s. Whether fighting for the right to marry the person we choose or ending abuses such as child labor children around the world, Amnesty International has been working to make the world a better place. Amnesty International Day aims to promote human rights and raise awareness about their abuse and how our choices affect them every day.

Some interesting truths about Amnesty International Day

This event calls on everyone - regardless of nationality, culture or race - to rise up and take part in a number of different events taking place around the world to defend human rights. Amnesty is involved in a wide range of issues related to torture, sexual and reproductive freedom, international justice, disappearances and armed conflict. Through research and advocacy, the organization plays a huge role in helping free those who have been wrongly imprisoned, bringing perpetrators to justice, and helping to combat all types of abuse.

The importance of human rights

Understanding the importance of Amnesty Day essentially understands the importance of human rights. Human rights represent the key fundamental freedoms that belong to all of us. During WW2, it was pointed out that basic rights are not always guaranteed. For this reason, the former first lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the United Nations came together to address the issue in 1948.

Their collaboration led to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is this statement that Amnesty International strives to make and defend, and therefore, this statement is truly the focus of Amnesty International Day. These statutes are important because they are based on essential needs such as respect, dignity, equality and fairness. These are the basic things that every human being should enjoy. Sadly, however, there are human rights violations that happen around the world on a daily basis. There's a lot of work to be done and this is why a day like Amnesty Day is so important.

History of Amnesty International Day

Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization focused on defending human rights working to stop human rights abuses, fighting for justice for those whose rights have been violated, while expanding and enforcing human rights protections in international law, by lobbying governments and other power groups and making their violations public. Their initial focus was on the release of political prisoners, but now they focus on many issues. Their main concerns are about freedom of speech and conscience, and the right not to be tortured. Other concerns include the abolition of the death penalty, reproductive rights, and protection of refugees and migrants.

International Amnesty Day occurs on May 28, because that was the day in 1961 when attorney Peter Benenson published "Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer magazine, which was later reprinted around the world. In it, he refers to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, especially articles 18 and 19, which deal with the rights to freedom of thought and expression. He also announced an amnesty campaign called "Appeal for Amnesty." Amnesty International was founded in London that same year, largely through the efforts of Peter Benenson. That's where it still has its headquarters, but today has offices in more than 50 countries. Three million people are currently affiliated with the group, in more than 150 countries and territories.
