Crowded Nest Awareness Day
Crowded Nest Awareness Day is observed next on Thursday, June 12th, 2025 (180 days from today).
Every year, on the second Saturday of June, people around the world come together and celebrate Crowded Nest Awareness Day to raise awareness to crowded homes.
History of Crowded Nest Awareness Day
Many parents of adult children have moved out experience a feeling of loneliness and loss of purpose known as Empty Nest Syndrome. Another phenomenon, Crowd in the Nest Syndrome - known by some as CNS - is recognized today, as are the parents who experience it. Some empty nests have females returning to live with them, filling the nests again. Children sometimes bring their own children, making the nest more complete than ever. On top of that, older grandparents can move in and make more nests.
With up to 4 generations living under the same roof, a feeling of disparity can happen to those who have always thought of themselves as an empty nest. Crowd Nest Awareness Day, a day to raise awareness of the issue, appears to have been first observed in 2005 and may have been inspired by the book Crowded Nest Syndrome: Surviving the Return of Adult Children had been published several years earlier. This day culminated a few years later during the Great Depression when large numbers of adult children returned home to live with their parents.
Crowded houses
Do you know that the combination of large families, extended families, and friends can create a crowded home? With the current economy forcing more people out of their homes and more adult children staying with their parents longer, crowded homes are increasingly becoming an issue.
The biggest challenge is said to find space that is enough for everyone. Overcrowded nests can be breeding grounds for conflict and feelings of confinement. Crowded Nest Awareness Day is a day of finding solutions to give people their own space.
How to celebrate Crowded Nest Awareness Day
Are you a parent experiencing Crowd Nest Syndrome? Have your adult children moved in; maybe even bring their spouse and children? Have your parents and husband moved in as well? Does it overwhelm you to the point of feeling cramped in your own home? If that's the case, Crowded Nest Awareness Day will provide an opportunistic time to reflect on this and address the feelings you're having with the people you live with. Are you an adult child living in your parents' house? Have you talked to them about how they feel about it? Today is a great day to sit down with them and discuss how they are feeling.
