History of Drive-in Movie Day
Drive-in Movie Day is known as the anniversary of the first drive-in cinema. On June 6th, 1933, Richard Hollingshead opened this drive-in theatre, Park-in Theaters, in Pennsauken Township, near Camden, New Jersey. A year ago, he experimented in his driveway by placing a 1928 Kodak projector on the hood of his car, pinning a sheet of paper to a tree and placing a radio behind a screen. He thinks about how to resist the rain and how to control cars so that people can have a look. When his theater opened, he charged 25 cents for a car and 25 cents per person, but made sure no group paid more than a dollar. Four hundred cars can be put in a theater with the 40 x 50 feet screen. The first film was shown including Wife Beware with the starring of Adolphe Menjou.
In 1946, there were still only 300 drive-thru stores in the United States, but in 1949 Hollingshead's patent was overturned, which helped fuel the proliferation of drive-in stores across the country. From the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, drive-ins were at their peak. By 1957, about 6,000 were in service in the United States. Many of these show B-rated movies, but some show movies that are showing in cinemas. At present, there are less than 500 drive-in theaters left in the United States. It is possible because of some factors such as rising property prices in suburban areas, more movie theaters, and the rise of video rentals and streaming. Moreover, most new movies have to be shown digitally, and many small theaters are not able to afford the thousands of dollars to make this conversion.
