History of Giving Hearts Day

The Fargo, North Dakota-based Impact Foundation launched National Heart Donation Day in 2019 to celebrate its 24-hour event giving donations to charities across North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Heart Day was founded in 2008 by the Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF) and Impact Foundation as a way for people to support charities and causes they love. From just under $500,000 raised in the first year to over $19 million raised in 2020, it turned out to be a particularly impactful day. The registry at the National Day Calendar states that National Heart Donation Day will be celebrated on the second Thursday in February every year.
