February 11 every year is the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It is an occasion to recognize the critical role of women and girls play in science and technology.
Origin of International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On 22 December 2015, the General Assembly discussed and decided to choose an annual International Day to recognize the important role of women and girls in science and technology, through Resolution A/RES/ 70/212. 2016 was the first time of International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The idea behind this day is to ensure the equal participation and participation of women and girls in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on 11 February, implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women (link is external), with cooperative organizations and social partners civil society to promote women and girls in science, which is a great chance to promote the equal access and participation in science for women and girls. Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO, and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to have their opinions heard are the levers for development and peace.
Tackling some of the Sustainable Development Agenda's biggest challenges, from improving health to combating climate change, will rely on harnessing all talent. That means more and more women are working in these fields. Research diversity expands the pool of talented researchers, bringing fresh perspectives, talent and creativity. This day is a reminder that women and girls play an important role in the science and technology community and that their participation needs to be strengthened.
