Join Hands Day

Join Hands Day, celebrated across the United States on the first Saturday in May, is about uniting the older generation with the younger generation in a day of volunteering.

Humanity is always in vogue, no matter what age we are, and this is why we joyfully celebrate Join Hands Day, every first Saturday of May, on May 7 of this year. Old and new generations are often at the end of each other. Older generations believe that newer people are lazy and rebellious; while newer generations think their predecessors are too rigid and have outdated thinking. This stark difference was recently highlighted when the meme, “Ok, boomer,” began to take hold, whereby younger generations would say the phrase to older generations in response to constant nagging of later people. However, the structure of society is created and maintained through the unity and understanding of two generations. This is why Join Hands Day was born to unite people, regardless of age, for volunteering activities.

History of Join Hands Day

The first time of Join Hands Day was since 2000. Join Hands Day, always celebrated on the first Saturday in May, was inaugurated by the American Confederacy (1886) in partnership with the Points of Light (1990) organization. Both organizations are non-profit and aim to bring people and other organizations together from around the world for the betterment of society at large. The main purpose of the day is to unite the old and new generations to participate in volunteer activities together. Initially, people could sign up for their volunteer events on the Join Hands Day website for recognition and publicity. Recently, however, organizing committees have encouraged people to organize individual volunteer services and events.

Today, Join Hands Day is administered by the Life Assurance Association, another fraternal benefit society. In addition to providing volunteer services to the community, Joining Hands Day also provides a platform for different generations to come together and just talk. It may happen that one generation learns something new from the other. Furthermore, shared experiences and similar likes/dislikes strengthen the bond between two generations that often see the other as 'enemies'. So, Join Hands Day is not only good for the less fortunate but also a great initiative to ease the bitterness between two generations.

The main purpose of the day is to bring people of different generations together. The difference between people will always be there. But we need to find the correct balance and meet in the middle for a better world and life

• It is a celebration of the unification of mankind

As all species, our strength lies in our unity. As long as we are united, we can surely reach new heights by overcoming any and all difficulties. Our shared experiences and perspectives will help usher in new and better eras.

How to celebrate Join Hands Day

• Offer your volunteer services

Search for volunteer services near you and reach out to help. To work on your goals for the day, try and reach out to the older generation in your life to see if they're ready to join you. Record the memories of the day while doing your work for the society.

• Organize an event

If there are no volunteer events happening around you or you want to volunteer for something close and dear to you, organize the event yourself. Make the event your goal to match your volunteers with someone from another generation.

• Consciousness spreads

One of the ways to observe the day is to spread awareness about it. How about using the social media to share more about it? The more people know about this day, the better.
