History of National Call in Single Day

In 2005, Yahoo! Personals, the now defunct online dating service, created the Singles Day National Call. In doing so, they encourage single people to take time for themselves and their love lives. They encourage them to make the most of the time they spend looking for love, encouraging them to do things like make better dating decisions and "extend their lunch hour or take a personal day to get to know each other better."

Over the years, National Call in Single Day has become a day for people who don't want to be in their offices or workplaces on Valentine's Day, where everyone seems to be receiving flowers, candy, and gifts and be praised for them. Being single has become a reason they don't want to come, and it has become a day for singles to take time for themselves, which is hard for people in relationships to do during the day.

In celebration of the beginning of the year, Yahoo! The individual organizes events across the United States "to help single people find love by scouring the giant 8-foot-tall haystacks filled with attractive single men and women and interesting prizes." Prizes included diamond earrings and digital cameras, and the flagship event was held in Los Angeles and chaired by Paula Abdul. Singles across the country are also invited to sign in to Yahoo! Personalize and take the Love Personality & Style Test and Relationship Test, to help them better understand their personality and love style and its role in finding a partner fit.

How to celebrate National Call in Single Day

For those of you who are single, take some time for yourself and your love life today. Take a break from work at home or at least extend your lunch break, use the time to reflect on your love life and gain some insight into yourself. Perhaps you could also set up an online dating profile or look up singles events happening in your city. If you're not single, you probably won't have time to celebrate, as you'll be too busy to celebrate Valentine's Day.
