National Static Cling Day

National Static Cling Day is an annual celebration on April 26th to recognize static cling.

What is Static Cling?

In this hands-on activity, students will learn how to find electrostatics by participating in science and engineering activities that ask questions, plan, and conduct investigations. Students draw a "person diagram" to model the Bohr model of an atom. Then, in pairs, they inserted a comb (in their hair) and used it to suck up an O-shaped piece of cereal and then watched the cereal observer jump away when it touched the comb. They did the same with the Styrofoam pellets, watching them pull toward a charged comb, and then jump back onto the table. By making these investigations, students will find the key ideas of electric and magnetic forces, the interweaving concept of cause and effect, and their understanding of static electricity and what is happening at a high level. This engineering curriculum is suitable with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS in abbreviation).

It is so important to check carefully static electricity before designing, manufacturing and packaging electronic circuit boards. If there is too much static electricity, the electrical components on the circuit board may malfunction and the circuit board may not function at all. When making circuit boards for computers and electronics, engineers wear special white suits known as "rabbit suits" and work in "clean rooms" to help and protect circuit boards from contaminants and static electricity.
