Towel Day is an annual opportunity to honor an author named Douglas Adams. He was the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a classic sci-fi novel. Towel Day is celebrated in memory of him after his death of a sudden heart attack at the age of 49. His fans wanted to find a way to remember his life's merits. On this day, fans carry towels everywhere. Nowadays, we celebrate this day with a towel around our necks because we love Douglas Adams!

History of Towel Day

Observed annually by fans of Douglas Adams, Towel Day commemorates the work of the author best known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.

First and foremost, it's important to note for those unfamiliar with Douglas Adams that, according to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy a towel is an incredibly useful thing.

And that's very important. In fact, we are only hitchhikers on Earth and use towels for many useful purposes. We dry furry pets and roll towels neatly into coordinated rows. On long trips, they ease the knots in our necks. Even our little ones use them to dry off after swimming. Probably not very efficient though. It can also provide shade on a sunny day.

We've found that bath towels in small form are also effective for sports. Golfers and bowlers use them. Add a small scarf to a soccer player's hip and call it a flag or wave a white scarf during a surrender battle.

In an emergency, a towel can stop bleeding or possibly bandage the wound. It can also reduce fever. Wrap it around you. Wash the car or oil it. A really big scarf can be enough for a toga party. However, in reality, it probably won't.

The list of options is here on Earth and beyond in every galaxy. The important lesson of the day is that do not leave the house without a towel.

Towel Day is celebrated on May 25th, two weeks after Adams died in 2001 - May 11tg. This day has been considered as a sort of holiday of enthusiast related to popularity.

Why a towel? It is said that the scarf plays a very important role in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Milky Way". Adams wrote about towels being the most useful item for interstellar travelers. In chapter three of the book, he writes, “A scarf, it’s about the most useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Part of it is that it has great practical value - you can wrap it around your body to keep warm as you cross Jaglan Beta's frigid moon; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble sand beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the pungent sea steam; you can sleep under it beneath the stars that shine so brightly over the desert world of Kakrafoon…” and so the use continues.

The most famous advice of Adams is never go out without a towel. This day has been commemorated for 19 years. It is a great occasion for Adams’ fans to get together around the world. It is said that Adams was humorous and witty and of course, Tower Day is a reflection of his lovable goofiness.
