World Password Day
World Password Day is observed next on Thursday, May 1st, 2025 (168 days from today).
World Password Day is considered as a means to promote better password habits. A password is an integral security measure for one's online/digital identity and enables users to gain private access to a number of online services.
Why World Password Day?
This auspicious day is dedicated to making it possible for anyone present online to enjoy the services they seek privately. The password is usually unique to one person and ensures that there is no unauthorized access to the platform or your digital account. Acting as a gatekeeper to all digital identities, the password ensures that you can shop online, use dating sites, use online banking, enjoy media social media, do your private affairs and even send and receive information.
Since we now live in the digital age, it is imperative to have a secure password for your privacy. Password security is measured by strength, which is why people often incorporate a mixture of characters to make it harder for someone to guess or remember and access their accounts.
It is important to have a password that is long, unique, and somewhat technical or complex as a means of protecting your valuable information from unauthorized hands or access. Another tactic commonly used by people is to change their password every predetermined period, such as a month, two or three months.
Any time you feel or suspect that your account has been hacked or accessed without your knowledge and permission, you should quickly change it and even set up multi-factor authentication.
History of World Password Day
Security researcher Mark Burnett first encouraged people to have a "password day" where they update important passwords in his 2005 book Perfect Passwords. Inspired by his idea, Intel Security took the initiative to announce the first Thursday of World Password Day in May 2013. Submitted by Big Monocle in 2016, Password Day aims to generate awareness of the need for good password security.
