History of Car Keys and Small Change Day

What do car keys and small change have in common? Of course, both are usually stored in the bag! Today, we honor pocket people and all they have done to make our lives easier over the years. Some holiday websites claim that this date occurs on February 28 because bags were invented on that date in 1590, but we cannot substantiate this claim.

Pockets are found on clothing but also on other things like backpacks. Their name is derived from an Old French word meaning bag. Cloth and leather bags, the predecessors of bags, date back to ancient times. For example, around 3,300 BC, Iceman carried everything in a bag that was attached to his belt.

By the thirteenth century, "refrigerators" were in use in Europe. They are similar to pockets and are accessed through slits in tunics. By the sixteenth century, the pocket was used on vests and trousers which became more popular throughout the century. Starting in the seventeenth century, women used removable pouches similar to purses. They are usually concealed, tied between petticoats and skirts. In contrast, pockets are sewn into men's clothing and are visible from the outside.

By the 1800s, women's "bags" were becoming smaller and more ornate, and more for fashion than function. Now they are worn over clothes, attached to the belt. When wallets became the norm, they virtually disappeared. The bag remained on men's clothing throughout this time. In the 1920s, women adapted several styles of men's clothing, including wearing pants with pockets. Movie stars started the trend, and more and more women wore this outfit as the 1920s progressed. However, wallets continued to be popular, and many bags for women in the mid-twentieth century were not designed to hold much. Jeans became popular in the second half of the twentieth century. Their bags stand out from many other types of clothing.

There are many types of bags. Fob bags hold pocket watches and have been popular on trousers, jeans and waistcoats. Pocket watches are no longer popular, so bags are no longer used for that purpose. Individual pockets or pockets with slits that are cut into the garment instead of sewn on. They are often found on tuxedo jackets. Camp or shopping bags are sewn on the outside of clothing and are usually square. Beer bags are used to transport a bottle of beer. They were popular in jackets and vests in some Midwest areas in the 1910s. They lost popularity during Prohibition but made a slight comeback in the 1980s and early 2000s. The bag has a "smile" slit commonly found on western clothing. Other popular bag styles include patch bags, flap bags, and corded bags.
