International Quirkyalone Day
International Quirkyalone Day is observed next on Friday, February 14th, 2025 (123 days from today).
International Quirkyalone Day is annually celebrated on February 14th to celebrate the things you love to do alone or with friends.
History of International Quirkyalone Day
Although International Quirkyalone Day occurs on the same day as Valentine's Day, and its name seems to imply that it is an anti-Valentine's Day holiday that should be spent alone, that's not entirely true. Instead, it is a less commercial alternative to Valentine's Day and can be celebrated alone or with others. It celebrates self-love, but also romantic, platonic, and familial love, and there aren't many rules about how it must be celebrated.
"Quirkyalone" is defined as someone who enjoys being single or spending time alone. When they date, they do it for the purpose, not just to be able to stay in a relationship — they believe in waiting for the right person instead of making arrangements. According to Sasha Cagen, creator of International Quirkyalone Day, "Quirkyalone is ultimately a philosophy about finding happiness within yourself whether you're single or in a relationship." Singles embrace the possibilities and how they can live a fulfilling life while single. People who are daytime but in a relationship are called "oddists". They celebrate their individuality while remaining cooperative.
The holiday was first celebrated in 2003, with events taking place in San Francisco, New York, Providence and Glasgow. Within fifteen years, celebrations were held in more than 40 cities across four continents. Not long after starting the vacation, Sasha Cagen published a book, Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics.
How to celebrate International Quirkyalone Day
This day may be geared more towards singles, but anyone can celebrate. Celebrations should focus on both love and personal, and there should be no material pitfalls on Valentine's Day. It doesn't matter if you are "quirkytogether" or "quirkyalone". Singles celebrate by discovering ways to live a fulfilling life when not in a relationship, while those in a relationship discover ways to express their individuality in a relationship while maintaining a cooperative relationship.
The creator of this day has suggested several ways to celebrate this day, including the following:
- Try a new recipe.
- Go to a new part of town and become a tourist in your own city.
- Have a slumber party.
- Rearrange your furniture.
- Go shopping at a thrift store.
- Get creative on your own, by sewing, wrapping or doing whatever else you want to do.
- Make art, craft or cook a meal with your friends or lover.
- Get chrysanthemums for yourself or give to someone else. Daisies are the official flower of the quirkyalone movement.
- Volunteers.
- Go to or throw a quirkyalone party.
