History of National Cheer Coach Day
Cheer coach is a physically demanding and challenging sport. It includes elements of competition and teamwork and is an integral part of the entire sport. Cheer coach lead support teams to the next level.
The week recognizes the hard work and dedication of cheer coach, their teams and coaches. Cheer coach require a physical strength, flexibility and coordination. While many Cheer coach stand on the sidelines cheering on a soccer or basketball team, providing motivation and organizing fan support, they also compete across the country. These competitions allow cheer coach to showcase their skills while also challenging them and rewarding them for their hard work.
- In 1869, the original cheer coach in the United States was the first soccer game between Rutgers and Princeton. It's an organized hymn of "Sis Boom Bah."
- Nearly 30 years later in 1898, the first recognized cheer coach was at the University of Minnesota. Student Johnny Campbell directed a cheering crowd “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah. ”
- It wasn't until 1923 that the first women became cheer coach at the University of Minnesota.
