Do you want to do something tropical? Add a slice of fruit on it. That's right, we're talking about an apple not an apple, a pine not a pine, a pineapple! National Pineapple Day is dedicated to this cutest little fruit and the greatest myth… It doesn't grow on trees. You do not know about it? You are hardly alone; most people think this thorny fruit hangs from the tree like a coconut, No!
History of National Pineapple Day
Pineapple has originated from tropical and subtropical America and then been brought to other places. Fruit has become a signature ingredient in the meat, vegetable, fish and rice dishes of what is known as Pan-Asian cuisine. The fruit is used fresh if it is available or in canned form worldwide. In the United States and in Europe, it is also used as a pastry filling or in baked desserts.
The earliest written references to pineapples are by Christopher Columbus, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, and Sir Walter Raleigh, who found pineapples growing in the West Indies, where it was used for food and as food.
The Portuguese were clearly responsible for the early popularization of pineapples. They introduced it to Saint Helena soon after they discovered the island in 1502. Soon after, they brought it to Africa and, around 1550, to India. By the end of the 16th century, the cultivation of this plant was widespread throughout most of the tropical regions of the world, including several islands in the South Pacific. The main modern pineapple growers include Costa Rica, Brazil, China, India and Thailand.
National Pineapple Day was first celebrated on April 20th, 2016. The word pineapple in English was first registered in 1398 when it was originally used to identify the reproductive organs of seed plants which is now known as a pine cone. When European scientists discovered this tropical fruit, they called pineapples; a term first recorded in that sense in 1664 because of their coincidence with what is now called a pine cone. The term pine cone was first posted in 1694 and used to replace the original meaning of pineapple. These fruits are useful in so many ways, stand alone and it is also used to make a delicious fruit smoothie filled with vitamin C. If you like a juicy tropical refreshment to cool you down on a hot day, Pineapple is half the solution, Pina Colada.
