If you love pretzel cakes, then National Pretzel Day on April 26th is the day for you. Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, started with the Catholic Church. Around the 7th century AD, monks gave their students pieces of baking dough that were twisted into a cross-legged shape. At that time, crossed arms were the traditional posture for prayer. Not only mixed with water, flour and salt, but cookies, also are perfect when meat, dairy and eggs are banned. So you've got some National Pretzel Day history with a twist!
History of National Pretzel Day
There are a number of different documents about the origin of biscuits. Most people agree that it has a Christian background, and that they were developed by monks. According to the History of Science and Technology, in A.D. 610, an Italian monk invented biscuits as a reward for children learning how to pray.
Another source places this invention in a monastery in the south of France. The pretzels also have tight relationship with the Greek Ring-shaped bread used in monasteries a thousand years ago. In the Catholic Church, biscuits have a religious significance in both composition and shape. Some rings of cookies may use for a practical purpose. For example: bakers could hang them, then project upwards and show in the painting by Job Berckheyde (1681).
Dutch immigrants in Pennsylvania introduced biscuits to North America in the 19th century. At this time, many artisanal cookie shops were concentrated in central Pennsylvania, and their popularity quickly spread. In the 20th century, soft biscuits became very popular in areas like Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York.
National Pretzel Day began in 2003 when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell proclaimed April 26th in recognition of the importance of pretzels to the history and economy of the state.
