National Quilting Day
National Quilting Day is observed next on Saturday, March 15th, 2025 (156 days from today).
Perhaps the oldest type of blanket-out-pillow-cushion is animal hide from the local animal, which is very warm without the need for textiles. Thus, even the oldest human tribes could have obtained it by simply hunting, cleaning, and tanning leather for use. On the third Saturday in March, National Quilting Day is celebrated. Across the country, shows, classes, open museums and more celebrate the day. It also appreciates and acknowledges the quilters, along with all their long labor, love and skill that went into creating each quilt.
A quilt is a layer of braiding or stuffing between two layers of fabric put together. Early American quilts were the result of patching up pieces of worn-out blankets and clothing. Since they had to weave their own fabrics, there was little time to creatively put the colorful and artistic patterns together. These items are purely functional.
By the mid-18th century, intricate quilts designed to be passed from mother to daughter were made by Americans. These quilts often stitched together from scraps of salvaged clothing and other bedding.
History of National Quilting Day
Quilting Day is the result of a June 1991 resolution by the National Quilting Association. At the 22nd annual show in Lincoln, the National Quilting Association proposed and National Quilting Day began.
