National Specially-abled Pets Day
(Also known as Disabled Pets Day)
National Specially-abled Pets Day is observed next on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025 (141 days from today).
National Specially-abled Pets Day is a great opportunity to honor the heroic animals and raise awareness of people about caring for disabled pets, specially-abled pets.
National Specially-abled Pets Day celebrate and honor dogs who are disabled or face some kind of physical challenge. These dogs have bravely lived with paralysis, amputation, blindness and deafness. Whether due to illness, birth defects or trauma, these dogs' disabilities do not diminish their ability to show love and live fulfilling lives.
History of National Specially-abled Pets Day
Colleen Paige, an animal advocate, author, and pet lifestyle expert, is the founder of National Specially-abled Pets Day. Founded in 2006 and internationally well-received, the decision to change the name came as founder, Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Rescue Advocate, Colleen Paige feels it does not fit. Colleen said: "The name has a negative connotation because these pets most likely! They never have to readjust to life... and we need to keep up with them!"
National Specially-abled Pets Day is established to educate the public about the care of pets with disabilities. The day has the disabled animals looking for a home. It also encourages animal lovers to consider choosing a pet with a disability when they are looking to adopt a new family member. Before you adopt a special needs pet, consider time, energy, and financial needs.
- Do you need special training? Depending on your pet's needs, you have to learn some new skills. If your pet requires injections or some type of therapy, you will be the provider.
- If your pet is deaf or blind, you will need to be aware of their safety needs and concerns.
- Does your home fit their needs? Amputees and blind animals will need accommodation.
- Pets with special coats need more veterinary care. Costs can add up, so consider your finances before applying, not after.
Although pets with disabilities need extra care and accommodations, they still bring a lot of love and joy to a home.
