New Beer's Eve
New Beer's Eve is observed next on Sunday, April 6th, 2025 (178 days from today).
April 6th every year is New Beers Eve. New Beers Eve is observed the night before National Beer Day falls on April 7th in order to mark when the Cullen-Harrison Act was passed making the sale of beer legal in the United States, from April 7th 1933. To celebrate the end of Prohibition, people gathered outside breweries and pubs the night before waiting in the dark to legally buy their beer. Since then, the night of April 6 has been recognized as New Beers' New Year's Eve. On that first day, 1.5 million cases of beer were consumed by residents, creating momentum for future holidays.
Origin of New Beer's Eve
New Beer's Eve celebration is celebrated on the night of April 6th, a day before the celebration when beer began to be legally sold again on April 7, 1933. On New Year's Eve On the first day of New Beer, people lined up outside breweries and pubs and waited until midnight, when they could go inside and order a beer.
The ban had been effective from 1920 to 1933. March 23th 1933 was the day the Cullen-Harrison Act was passed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which included legalization of beer with up to 3.2% alcohol as well as alcoholic beverages. After signing the bill into law, Roosevelt is said to have said, "I think this is going to be the right time for a beer." Each state must pass their own laws permitting the sale of beer following the Cullen-Harrison Act. The act was followed by the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment on December 5, 1933, when the 21st Amendment went into effect.
