Student Government Day
Student Government Day is observed next on Friday, April 4th, 2025 (110 days from today).
Student Government Day or SGD is usually celebrated on the first Friday in April.
SGD has been observed every year since it was signed into law in 1947 (M.G.L. Chapter 6, Section 12M). Under the auspices of the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education with primary support from Senate and House staff, approximately 400 high school students participate in the program. All Massachusetts high schools are encouraged to hold an election in the fall so that a student in their middle or high school year, along with an alternate student, will represent the school at SGD. Students are assigned roles and have the opportunity to replicate the activities of a Senator, Representative, Supreme Court Justice or Constitutional Officer.
There are many ways in celebrating Student Government Day.
- Students will follow a member of Gilbert's leadership team and participate in a mock meeting of the Town Council. During the meeting, students will take on the roles of the Mayor, Council members, the Town Board, local business leaders and concerned citizens.
- Students will engage in a discussion of issues facing youth in Gilbert and provide feedback on current Town initiatives.
