World APS Day
(Also known as World Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome Day)
World APS Day is observed next on Monday, June 9th, 2025 (180 days from today).
Every year, World Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome (APS) Day raises awareness about this rare autoimmune disorder. This is also a day to educate the public about APS.
Some things about APS you do not know
When our immune system attacks normal proteins in the blood, the body will respond by forming antibodies mistakenly. These antibodies can increase the risk of dangerous blood clots forming. These blood clots form in the lungs, kidneys, and brain. This is something people with APS live with every day and they have to struggle for several years. For others, it is a lifelong illness. This disease can be especially damaging to pregnant women. APS can cause expectant mothers to have a miscarriage or stillbirth.
Other people with APS may experience the following:
- Stroke at a young age
- Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- Red rash
- Chronic headaches and migraines
- Bleeding nose and gums
Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome is more popular in women than in men. People with other autoimmune disorders or certain types of infections are more likely to get APS. If left untreated, APS can cause kidney failure, lung and heart problems.
There is no cure for APS. However, certain types of treatment can relieve symptoms. Most people with APS will have to use medications in order to prevent blood clots. These drugs are called anticoagulants. A low dose of aspirin may also be needed. Lifestyle changes can also help reduce blood clots and relieve symptoms. These include not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight.
History of World APS Day
Founded in 2005, APS Foundation of America, Inc. (APSFA) is the only U.S. nonprofit health agency dedicated to raising national awareness of Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), a major cause of multiple miscarriages, blood clots, and strokes in infancy and heart attack.
The first World APS Day was celebrated on June 9th, 2010 to celebrate their 5th birthday. APS Support UK has also become the advocate and promoter of the day.
How to celebrate World APS Day
On World Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome Day, people around the world wear burgundy to help spread awareness. Those who have been affected by APS are encouraged to share their stories. Other ways to get involved on this day are to learn more about this autoimmune disease or donate to an organization that funds APS research. Don't forget to share World APS Day with your photos as well as your opinion on social media by using the hashtag #WorldAPSDay.
