Writers' Rights Day
Writers' Rights Day is observed next on Monday, June 9th, 2025 (179 days from today).
History of Writers' Rights Day
On the first Writers' Rights Day, held on June 9th, 1992, writers called for higher and timelier pay, more money for later use of their work, and increased strengthen copyright protection. About 30 organizations have sponsored the day, including the National Writers Union, Authors Association, Published Authors Network, Romance Writers of America, and Science Fiction and Fake Writers idea of the United States. The organizations claim that the writers were ignored and abused by publishers.
As part of the day, a protest calling for better pay and better treatment of publishers' writers was held at Grand Central Station in New York City. The writer's electronic rights statement was signed at the rally. Chapters of the National Writers' Union have held seminars and performances around the country. Although official observance of the date seems to date back only to 1992, the date has unofficially existed ever since.
How to celebrate Writers' Rights Day
Perhaps the best way to mark this day is to learn more about or join a writer organization like the National Writers Union, Authors Guild, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, or Romance Writers of America. Some of these organizations also give out information about writers' rights that can be discovered today. For example, the Authors' Association has published a Legal Writer's Guide: An Authors Association Desk Reference. Supporting your favorite writers is another way you can make your mark on the day.
