History of Letter Carrier's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day
On the second Saturday in May, mail carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the United States gather the kindness and compassion of their postal customers, who attend. Join the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive - the largest one-day food drive in the country.
Led by mail carriers represented by the National Association for the Transport of Mail (AFL-CIO), with help from rural mail carriers, other postal workers and volunteers Other members, the organization has shipped more than a billion pounds of food over the past 25 years.
Carriers collect non-perishable food donations left in mailboxes and in the post office and deliver them to local community food banks, pantries, and shelters. There are a lot of participants of about 1,500 NALC branches in all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
United States Postal Service, National Association of Mail Carriers, National Association of Rural Mail Carriers, AFL-CIO, United Way, Valassis, Valpak Direct Marketing System, CVS Health, Kellogg's and the United Food and Commercial worker International Union are both supporting the Stamp Out Hunger food drive of the year.
To donate, simply place a box or can of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your mail carrier delivers the mail on the second Saturday in May. The carrier will do the rest. Food is sorted and delivered to a food bank or area pantry, where it is available to families in need.
One in eight Americans has to face with hunger/day in America. This drive is one way you can help people in your own city or town who need help.
When they ship you the parts, receipts and postcards of your mail order, you must do your part by filling their mailing bags with non-perishable food donation gifts.
Over the past 20 years, one billion pounds of food has been shipped using this drive sponsored by the National Mail Carriers Association. Mail carriers representing the NALC receive help from rural mail carriers, other postal workers, and other volunteers. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has received a number of awards over the years, including two Presidential Certificates of Achievement.
Stamp out Hunger Food Drive began in October 1991 as a pilot program. After the initial success of the journey taking place in 10 cities across the country, the program is ready to welcome spring. Food banks during this time of year struggle to meet demand as donations dwindle after the holiday season.
