The first National Cordova Ice Worm Day would be held in 1961 when local city planners decided that a major festival was needed to honor the town's heritage and uncover the unique creature that lived nearby glaciers and snowfields. In the first event, a contest was held to develop the mascot, the winner received $15 and an honorable place in the parade.
