VBF Day of Awareness, also known as Vascular Birthmark Foundation Day of Awareness, is observed annually on May 15th.
There is a high chance that at some point in your life you have encountered someone with a birthmark, and chances are that you have one yourself. Vascular Birthmark Day is a day of support, awareness and recognition for people with birthmarks and is there to help people understand those who have them. It's so amazing that bullying due to birthmarks is a common concern; especially a half of people have them! If you're one of those people with birthmarks or know someone with birthmarks, Vascular Birthmarks is for you!
History of VBF Day of Awareness
Birthmarks are extremely common, although most of the time they are not visible to everyone due to their location. If you have a birthmark, don't worry, almost half of babies are born with a stork birthmark, which is merely a discoloration that feels exactly like any other area of the body. Strawberry stains, a type of Vascular Birthmark, are another common occurrence in young children, forming during the first weeks of someone's life and eventually ending its development as they walk over the age of 10. Another common type of vascular birthmark is the Port-Wine Stains, due to a lack or deficiency of the nerve supply to the blood vessels in it.
The most important thing to know about birthmarks is that most of them are completely harmless to the patient and all of them are harmless to everyone around. While they can be unsightly, they can also be a beautiful and iconic part of someone's physical appearance. Vascular Birthmark Day aims to raise awareness of these common traits and prevent bullying behavior based on embarrassing birthmarks.
How to celebrate VBF Day of Awareness
The best way to celebrate Vascular Birthmark Day is to be proud of your birthmark, perhaps even sharing a photo of your birthmark on social media to declare that you're not embarrassed. If you know someone who has a birthmark and is being bullied, let stay beside them and advocate for them. Be sure that you contribute to prevent bullying from your community. You can also spend some time researching Vascular Birthmarks and learning about famous people, who have had them, learn how each type manifests, and just spend a little time educating yourself in general. Educate yourself about these common signs.
