• How many days until American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Day?
For the purpose of widely spreading humanitarian principles; prevent cruelty; and alleviate pain, fear, and suffering in animals, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or America's ASPCA Day, was born and takes place on April 10 every year.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Day’s history
April 10, 1866 was the founding date of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). It is the first animal welfare organization of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It operated with makeshift camps shelters and humane societies around the country, with a mission to prevent cruelty to animals. Its founder, Henry Bergh, was inspired to form the organization after witnessing a warhorse being beaten by its own drivers. While on a diplomatic mission abroad, at the behest of Abraham Lincoln, Bergh visited the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in London, which also influenced him in founding the ASPCA. .
The New York State Legislature passed the ASPCA incorporation charter on April 10, 1866. Finally, in April came the introduction of the first true cruelty to animal’s law in the United States. This law gives the ASPCA the power to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and arrest. The organization, headquartered in New York City, has become a model for many other humanitarian organizations around the country.
Today's holiday celebrates the foundation of the organization. In 2007, an official celebration was organized by the ASPCA on this day, with events being held around the country, as well as the "ASPCA Festival" in New York City's Union Square. In a suitable way, the ASPCA has also launched Animal Prevention Month, which also happens in April each year.
