The History of Fruitcake Toss Day
During ancient Rome, people knew a fruitcake recipe by mixing seeds, pine nuts, raisins and barley. Until the Middle Ages, there were extra honey, spices and preserved fruits. After that, fruitcake increasingly became popular all over Europe.
Recipes varied from country to country and depended on available ingredients. Sugar could help preserve fruits in the 16th century, which contributed to fruicake’s affordability and popularity.
Fruitcake Toss Day was celebrated anually by Manitou Springs from 1995. During competition, fruitcakes are thrown, hurled and cannoned into the air.
How to celebrate Fruitcake Toss Day
The most interesting way to celebrate this day is to take part in. This holiday is hold on the first Saturday of every Jannuary in Manitou Springs with the following manner:
Participants will bring their own fruitcakes with candied fruits, nuts, flour. Of course, there will fruitcake toss tech inspectors who will inspect fruitcake before they are allowed to be used for the competition to make sure they do not contain any substances hard enough to hurt anyone that may get hut in the head with a flying fruitcake. A special thing is that if you accidentally foget your fruitcake at home, you may rent one on the spot.
The Distance competition is about hurling a 2-pound fruitcakes as far as possible. Anyone who is able to hurl the fruitcake farthest is the winner. The distance is measured at the final resting spot of the fruitcake, not the position where it first hits the ground.
Another competition is Catch the Fruitcake. This is a three- member-in-group game. In this competition, the fruitcakes must have a minimum of 1 pound in weight to make sure no one gets hurt when try to catch them. The most fruitcakes the team catches, the winner is.
